Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development seeking communications intern

Internship Responsibilities:
The goal of this position is to provide the 17 Appalachian Ohio Community Action Agencies which make up the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD) and COAD with a student intern who will help coordinate communication functions and activities, including the preparation of newsletters, brochures, website content, special projects and other communication materials across a variety of platforms.
The opportunity provided the student is the chance to put classroom skills into everyday use, to learn about the function of not for profit organizations, to acquire knowledge about the Appalachian region of Ohio, and to involve themselves in a culture which may not be familiar to them.

Duties and Responsibilities
(COAD outlined a variety of tasks that the intern could be involved with and will tailor it to the skill set of the intern.)
Become familiar, educated and knowledgeable about programs and resources available through the member agencies and COAD. Become familiar with the Appalachian region and the counties in the region. Establish contacts at each agency.
Preparation of newsletters, brochures, website contents, special projects and other communication materials. Writes edits and prints materials for member agencies and COAD using a variety of platforms.
Establish marketing strategies and objectives to support and encourage promotion of the 17 member agencies of COAD. Confers with the Executive Director of individual agencies, COAD Board and COAD Executive Director to discuss and gain approval for implementing marketing strategies and objectives and for development of communication material and programs.
Conduct research for stories relevant to community action, COAD and its member agencies.
Provide input into the development of marketing and communication policies and develops communication procedures for the 17 member agencies and COAD.
Prepare communication and marketing reports.
Travel onsite to member agencies to gather information and offer support for marketing efforts for individual agencies.
Maintain positive working relationship with all member agencies. Be available to assist with member agency special events or projects as or when needed.

Internship Qualifications
The Intern should be enrolled in an appropriate course of study at an accredited 4 year University/College, preferably with at least junior standing. Student to use their own car (reimbursement given for mileage.) Need a current Driver’s license. (COAD will run a check on their driving record.)

Skills and Software Ability Needed
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with COAD and its member agencies, general public and other job contacts; work responsibly independently; communicate effectives in verbal and written form; relate effectively and productively with persons of various social and economic status; represent COAD and its member agencies in a positive and professional manner.
Skill in research, verbal and written communication; planning, scheduling and organizing of work; operation of computer; application of software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other office suite products.
Some travel within the region will be required.

Approximate Start and End Dates for Internship:
Start Spring semester; January13, 2014 and concludes May 2, 2014
