University Communications and Marketing seeking PACE student

Student will have the opportunity to write news and feature stories for COMPASS (www.ohio.edu/compass) with a focus on discovering, developing, and writing those stories of interest to students. This is a writing position where the student will also have the opportunity to work with other students to develop photo essays, video, and multimedia. Finally, opportunities exist for this student to contribute to the internal communications social media effort. The student will receive individual mentoring on each story or project, meets minimum weekly with his/her mentor (a professional communicator), and will receive end of semester and end of year evaluations.

The PACE student will be housed in the student news bureau located in the office of University Communications and Marketing, Scott Quad. He/she will have access to computers, telephones and a variety of news research tools.

BENEFITS OF THE POSITION: Students will receive one-on-one mentoring, become better writers and communicators, develop a strong portfolio, and get real-world writing and publications experience. At the end of this experience, a successful student will have a unique advanced portfolio as well as an unrivaled set of contacts and references. University Communications and Marketing is also committed to assisting all of its PACE students in finding gainful and meaningful summer internships or post-graduation jobs in a related field.

Past UCM student writers have gone on to work for national magazines, leading newspapers, big-city PR agencies and top trade journals.

QUALIFICATIONS: Extraordinary maturity and professionalism absolutely required. Completion of the

news writing course is strongly recommended. Interest in current campus events is vital. Good judgment a prerequisite.

EVALUATION: The student will be evaluated and mentored carefully and continuously. Evaluations will be based upon professionalism, quality of writing and overall work.
